Israelis commemorate second anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks proceed
Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the terms of the plan.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an late session of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official said the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to produce any significant progress," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the two sides.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
