Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
