The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
