Ultra-Conservative Former Congressman J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Incoming President.
Following a conclusive runoff election, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Commanding Win
With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Recognized for his unwavering Catholic views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly built on promises to tackle increasing insecurity and radically curb migration.
He consistently pointed to migrants, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the campaign, he issued an stern warning for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His plans featured Trump-inspired measures such as erecting holding facilities, barriers, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost frontier.
Amid a Continental Shift
Numerous analysts interpret Kast's success as fitting into a wider conservative wave in the region, similar to this year's electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other pundits further view it as a part of the regular alternation of power between left and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Solid Mandate
Despite his sweeping popular vote win, Kast is not expected to command an absolute majority in Congress, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if all conservative parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation might hinder his plans, including a vow to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.
"We have many things about how a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not explained the way he will achieve them," said a political science analyst.
The expert added, "In terms of the economy, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies associated with the right. But the area with far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
