A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he said following the success at Manchester.
